MATH 098 Course Syllabus

NJIT Academic Integrity CODE:  All Students should be aware that the Department of Mathematical Sciences takes the University Code on Academic Integrity at NJIT very seriously and enforces it strictly.  This means that there must not be any forms of plagiarism, i.e., copying of homework, class projects, or lab assignments, or any form of cheating in quizzes and exams.  Under the University Code on Academic Integrity, students are obligated to report any such activities to the Instructor.

 

Math 098-004:  Introduction to College Math - A

Textbook:  College Algebra by Ratti and McWaters, 2nd edition. ISBN-10: 0-321-64031-4.

Prerequisites:  Placement by performance on standardized entrance examinations.

Grading Policy:  The final grade in this course will be determined as follows:

Drop Date:  Please note that the University Drop Date NMarch 28, 2011 deadline will be strictly enforced.

Homework Policy:  Textbook assignments are due the class day following the section lecture and will be collected at the beginning of class. In addition, section problems assigned using the ‘MyMathLab’ software application must be completed by 3 pm on the class day following the section lecture.

Quizzes:  There will be a short quiz every week on the material covered during the previous week.

Attendance:  Attendance at all classes (both lecture and recitation) will be recorded and is mandatory. Attendance at all classes and recitations are mandatory and will be recorded. Unexcused class/recitation absences exceeding three will result in a warning and a recommendation to withdraw from the course. Excused absences require proper documentation. Please make sure you read and fully understand the Department’s Attendance Policy. This policy will be strictly enforced.

Exams:  All sections will take three common midterm exams during the semester and one common final exam during the final exam week. Midterm exams are held on Wednesdays on the following days:

Exam 1:

February 9, 2011

Exam 2:

March 9, 2011

Exam 3:

April 13, 2011

Final Exam Week:

May 5-11, 2011


The time of the midterm exams is 4:15-5:40 pm. The final exam will test your knowledge of all the course material taught in the entire course. Make sure you read and fully understand the department's Examination Policy. This policy will be strictly enforced. Please note that electronic devices (such as calculators, cell phones, CD players, etc.) are not allowed during any exam.

Makeup Exam Policy:  There will be No make-up EXAMS during the semester. In the event the Final Exam is not taken, under rare circumstances where the student has a legitimate reason for missing the final exam, a makeup exam will be administered by the math department. In any case the student must notify the Math Department Office and the Instructor that the exam will be missed and present written verifiable proof of the reason for missing the exam, e.g., a doctors note, police report, court notice, etc., clearly stating the date AND time of the mitigating problem.

Electronic Devices Policy:  Please note that laptops, calculators, cellular phones, IPods, beepers, and any other electronic devices may not be used in class or during any exam. These devices should be turned off and removed from view.
