ABSTRACT

----------------------------------------

From everyday observation, it is commonly thought that particles in a sedimenting suspension essentially just fall at a speed determined by the properties of particles and the suspending fluid. This impression has left deep marks on scientific theories and engineering practice related to sedimentation of suspensions. We examine the theories resulting from this view and place them in a larger context showing there is more happening in sedimentation than particles just falling down.
