Title: "Statistical Physics of Data Assimilation"

Abstract:

The transfer of information from observed data to models of the observed system typically has noisy measurements, errors in the models, and uncertainty in the state of the model when observations commence. The statistical physics problem posed by this is discussed in a path integral formulation which provides a framework for analyzing the consistency of models with observations, and even more critically prediction by those models, when unmeasured states and unknown parameters are well estimated, of future observations. Some examples from small "weather" models and from neural dynamics will be discussed.
