Title: "Accelerating PDE-Constrained Optimization Using Reduced-Order Models"

Abstract:

Design optimization under PDE constraints is usually a computationally intensive task due to the repeated computations associated with solving the PDE. Projection-based model reduction aims at alleviating that cost by reducing the dimensionality of the system of equations to be solved by considering solutions confined to a subspace of much smaller dimension. That subspace is usually generated in an offline phase where intensive computations are conducted, leading to fast online predictions.

Two comprehensive approaches are developed in this work. The first one follows this two-phase offline/online strategy, thereby leading to an optimization procedure relying only on reduced-order models. The second approach progressively updates the reduced-order model as the optimization procedure progresses. While that second approach does not lead to a pure online phase, it avoids the potential expensive offline training phase. In both case, special attention is given to the convergence of the proposed procedure. Applications to the design optimization of computational fluid dynamics-based systems will highlight the properties of the proposed approaches.
