Title: "Self-organization in Confined Swimmer Suspensions"

Abstract:

Colonies of micro-swimmers such as bacteria and micro-algae, are known to display intricate patterns in nature and in experiments. In the absence of external stimuli or quorum sensing, self-organization occurs due to mechanical and hydrodynamic forces between the individuals, and is often guided by the confinement geometry. I will describe simulation methods that capture the correct swimmer motion and discuss the dynamics inside circular drops, micro-channels and peristaltic domains, as also confirmed in recent experiments. The similarities and differences between the behavior micro-swimmers such as bacteria, algae and spermatozoa will be noted.
