Course Description:  This course provides an introduction to the use of mathematical techniques applied to problems in biology. Discrete and continuous models of biological phenomena will be discussed. Biological topics discussed range from the subcellular molecular systems and cellular behavior to physiological problems, population biology and developmental biology. Techniques of phase plane analysis for differential equations are introduced in the course. No prior background in biology is necessary. Effective From: Spring 2005.

Departmental Policies:

Attendance:  Students must attend all classes and recitations. Absences from class will inhibit your ability to fully participate in class discussions and problem solving sessions. Tardiness to class is very disruptive to the instructor and students and will not be tolerated. Students might be withdrawn from the class or receive an "F" because of absences.  For additional details, please click here.

Common Exam Policy:  There are NO MAKE-UP MIDTERM EXAMS. Students who fail to take an exam will receive a score of zero unless they have a legitimate excuse. Students with legitimate excuses should contact the Course Coordinator.

Final Exam Policy:  There will be no makeup final exams, except in rare situations where the student has a legitimate reason for missing an exam, including illness, death in the family, accident, requirement to appear in court, etc. The student MUST notify the Math Office and the Instructor that he/she will miss an exam. In all cases, the student MUST present proof for missing the exam, e.g., a doctor's note, police report, court notice, etc., clearly stating the date AND times.

Cellular phones:  All cellular phones and beepers must be switched off during all class times.
