MATH 109 Course Syllabus

Prerequisites:  Math 108 with a grade of C or better -or- placement by performance on standardized entrance examinations.

 

Number of Credits:  4

 

Course Description:  Intended for students whose major requires Math 111. Consists of a series of projects, many of which introduce and use elementary differentiation and/or integration in which the students perform sustained algebraic and trigonometric computations. The projects involve the following topics: radian measure, conic sections, trigonometric functions and identities, laws of sines and cosines, logarithmic equations, partial fraction decomposition, systems of linear and nonlinear equations, functions in polar coordinates, and hyperbolic functions. Degree credit awarded for the following majors only: Hist, PTC and STS. Effective From: Fall 2007.


Departmental Policies:

 

Attendance:  If a student is absent for more than three classes, including both lecture and recitation and his/her test average is below 35 after the first midterm exam or below 45 after the second midterm exam, the student will be strongly advised to withdraw from the class.  If the student does not withdraw, or if the limit of three absences is reached after the withdrawal deadline, he/she will receive the grade of F.  The attendance policy will be strictly enforced.  For additional details, please click here.

 

Common Exam Policy:  There are NO MAKE-UP MIDTERM EXAMS. Students who fail to take an exam will receive a score of zero unless they have a legitimate excuse. Students with legitimate excuses should contact the Course Coordinator.

 

Final Exam Policy:  There will be no makeup final exams, except in rare situations where the student has a legitimate reason for missing an exam, including illness, death in the family, accident, requirement to appear in court, etc. The student MUST notify the Math Office and the Instructor that he/she will miss an exam. In all cases, the student MUST present proof for missing the exam, e.g., a doctor's note, police report, court notice, etc., clearly stating the date AND times.

 

Cellular phones:  All cellular phones and beepers must be switched off during all class times.
