NJIT Academic Integrity CODE:  All Students should be aware that the Department of Mathematical Sciences takes the University Code on Academic Integrity at NJIT very seriously and enforces it strictly.  This means that there must not be any forms of plagiarism, i.e., copying of homework, class projects, or lab assignments, or any form of cheating in quizzes and exams.  Under the University Code on Academic Integrity, students are obligated to report any such activities to the Instructor.

Prerequisites:  Placement by performance on standardized entrance examinations.

Number of Credits:  4 additive

Course Description:  Intended for students whose major requires Math 113, Math 135 or Math 138. Topics include: Elementary Algebra, Introduction to Graphs and Functions, Linear Functions, Equations, Inequalities, Systems of Linear Equations, Radicals and Complex Numbers, Quadratic Equations, Rational Expressions and Rational Functions, Functions and Relations, Exponential and Logarithmic Functions and Equations. Introduction to the logistics of applied calculus. Diverse applications will be emphasized throughout the course. This course may not be used to satisfy degree requirements in any program.

Departmental Policies:

Attendance:  If a student is absent for more than three classes, including both lecture and recitation and his/her test average is below 35 after the first midterm exam or below 45 after the second midterm exam, the student will be strongly advised to withdraw from the class.  If the student does not withdraw, or if the limit of three absences is reached after the withdrawal deadline, he/she will receive the grade of F. The attendance policy will be strictly enforced For additional details, please click here.

Common Exam Policy:  There are NO MAKE-UP MIDTERM EXAMS. Students who fail to take an exam will receive a score of zero unless they have a legitimate excuse. Students with legitimate excuses should contact the Course Coordinator.

Final Exam Policy:  There will be no makeup final exams, except in rare situations where the student has a legitimate reason for missing an exam, including illness, death in the family, accident, requirement to appear in court, etc. The student MUST notify the Math Office and the Instructor that he/she will miss an exam. In all cases, the student MUST present proof for missing the exam, e.g., a doctor's note, police report, court notice, etc., clearly stating the date AND times.

Cellular phones:  All cellular phones and beepers must be switched off during all class times.
