MATH 135 Course Syllabus - SPRING 2013

Math 135:  Mathematics for Business

 

 

Number of Credits:  3

 

Course Description:  This course is intended for SOM (Business) students and is an introduction to mathematics of business, principles of differential and integral calculus, and optimization. Effective From: Spring 2009.

Prerequisites:  Math 107 with a grade of C or better or Math 109 with a grade of C or better or Math 101 with a grade of C or better or Math 110 with a grade of C or better or placement by performance on standardized entrance examinations.

Textbook:  Introductory Mathematical Analysis for Business, Economics, and the Life and Social Sciences, 13th edition, by E. F. Haeussler, Jr., R. S. Paul, R. J. Wood, ISBN-10: 0-321-64372-0.

Your final letter grade will be based on the following tentative curve. This curve may be adjusted slightly at the end of the semester. NOTE:  This course needs to be passed with a grade of C or better in order to proceed to Math 246.

Drop Date:  Please note that the University Drop Date March 26, 2013 deadline will be strictly enforced.

Quiz Policy:  Every week there will be a short quiz on the topics presented the previous week. There are no make-up quizzes. In case of an excused absence, the quiz will not be included in the final grade.

Homework Policy:  There will be a few homework assignments to complete during the semester. The assignments and their due dates will be given in class.

Attendance:  Attendance at all classes will be recorded and is mandatory. Please make sure you read and fully understand the Department’s Attendance Policy. This policy will be strictly enforced.

Exams:  There will be three midterm exams and one comprehensive final exam during the semester. Exams are held in class on the following days:

The final exam will test your knowledge of all the course material taught in the entire course. Make sure you read and fully understand the department's to Examination Policy. This policy will be strictly enforced. Please note that calculators, cellular phones, beepers, and all other electronic devices may not be used during any exam.

Makeup Exam Policy:  No make-up quizzes or EXAMS will be given.  In the event the Final Exam is not taken, under rare circumstances where the student has a legitimate reason for missing the final exam, a makeup exam will be administered by the math department. In any case the student must notify the Math Department Office and the Instructor that the exam will be missed and present written verifiable proof of the reason for missing the exam, e.g., a doctors note, police report, court notice, etc., clearly stating the date AND time of the mitigating problem.
