NJIT HONOR CODE

All Students should be aware that the Department of Mathematical Sciences takes the NJIT Honor code very seriously and enforces it strictly.  This means there must not be any forms of plagiarism, i.e., copying of homework, class projects, or lab assignments, or any form of cheating in quizzes and exams.  Under the Honor Code, students are obligated to report any such activities to the Instructor.  If you have any doubts about where the line is between collaboration and copying, please ask the Instructor.

SPRING 2012

Course Schedule Link

»      Instructor:  Prof. Petropoulos

»      Textbook:  Mathematical Methods in the Physical Sciences (3rd Ed.) by Mary L. Boas; Publisher:  Wiley, ISBN: 9780471198260.  Supplemental material will be assigned as needed.

»      Grading Policy:  The final grade in this course will be determined as follows:

       Homework:

30%

       Midterm Exams:

40%

       Final Exam:

30%

Please note that the University Drop Date March 20, 2012 deadline will be strictly enforced.

»      Readings:  You will be expected to read the textbook. For maximum benefit, you should do this before I give the lecture or immediately after. Readings are from Boas.

»      Homework Policy:  Problem sets will be assigned and collected approximately biweekly. Note that this is 30% of your grade!

»      Exams:  Midterm exams are held in class on the following days:

Exam 1

February , 2012

Exam 2

April , 2012

Midterm 1 will cover Matrix Algebra and Vector Analysis.  Midterm 2 will cover Fourier Analysis and Partial Differential Equations. The final exam will be scheduled during the exam period and will be cumulative, with an emphasis on Complex Analysis.

»      Attendance and Participation:  Being absent from class will inhibit your ability to fully participate in class discussions and problem solving sessions and will therefore affect your grade.

»      Makeup Exam Policy: There will be No make-up EXAMS or Quizzes during the semester. In the event the Final Exam is not taken, under rare circumstances where the student has a legitimate reason for missing the final exam, a makeup exam will be administered by the math department. In any case the student must notify the Math Department Office and the Instructor that the exam will be missed and present written verifiable proof of the reason for missing the exam, e.g., a doctors note, police report, court notice, etc., clearly stating the date AND time of the mitigating problem.

»      Cellular Phones:  All cellular phones must be switched off during all class times and exams.
