MATH 337 Course Syllabus - FALL 2012

Math 337:  Linear Algebra

 

Number of Credits:  3

 

Course Description:  Matrices, determinants, systems of linear equations, vector spaces, linear transformations, eigenvalues, eigenvectors, and related topics.

Prerequisites:  Math 112 with a grade of C or better or Math 133 with a grade of C or better.

Grading Policy:  The final grade in this course will be determined as follows:

Your final letter grade will be based on the following tentative curve. This curve may be adjusted slightly at the end of the semester.  NOTE:  This course needs to be passed with a grade of C or better in order to proceed to Math 373, Math 391, Math 450H, Math 473, Math 475 or Math 477.

Drop Date:  Please note that the University Drop Date November 6, 2012 deadline will be strictly enforced.

Projects:  It is vital that you complete the required assignments by the specified dates.

Quiz Policy:  A short quiz based on the homework problems will be given.

Attendance: Students must attend all classes and recitations. Absences from class will inhibit your ability to fully participate in class discussions and problem solving sessions. Tardiness to class is very disruptive to the instructor and students and will not be tolerated. Students might be withdrawn from the class or receive an "F" because of absences. Attendance at all classes will be recorded and is mandatory. Please make sure you read and fully understand the Department’s Attendance Policy. This policy will be strictly enforced.

MATLAB:  MATLAB is a mathematical software program that is used throughout the science and engineering curricula. Several MATLAB assignments will be given out. These assignments have been designed to help you learn how to use this software in order to visualize many of the concepts taught in class.

Exams:  There will be two common midterm exams during the semester and one common final exam during the final exam week. Exams are held on the following days:

Exam 1:

October 10, 2012

Exam 2:

November 7, 2012

Final Exam Week:

December  14-20, 2012


Day sections will have common examinations on the above listed dates from 4:15pm to 5:40pm and evening sections from 5:45pm to 7:10pm. A comprehensive final examination will be given at the end of the semester. The date for this final examination will be announced at the end of the semester. Make sure you read and fully understand the department's Examination Policy. This policy will be strictly enforced. Please note that calculators, cellular phones, beepers, and all other electronic devices may not be used during any exam.

Makeup Exam Policy:  There will be No make-up EXAMS during the semester. In the event the Final Exam is not taken, under rare circumstances where the student has a legitimate reason for missing the final exam, a makeup exam will be administered by the math department. In any case the student must notify the Math Department Office and the Instructor that the exam will be missed and present written verifiable proof of the reason for missing the exam, e.g., a doctors note, police report, court notice, etc., clearly stating the date AND time of the mitigating problem.

Cellular Phones:  All cellular phones and beepers must be switched off during all class times.
