Abstract
Diffusion is usually thought of as stabilizing. Turing suggested that under certain
conditions chemicals can react and diffuse in such a way as to produce steady
state non-uniform spatial patterns, which are said to evolve by a
diffusion-driven instability. We derive conditions on reaction rate constants
and diffusion coefficients of two reacting and diffusing species that ensures
the generation of spatial patterns.
