On May 13-15, 2005, the Second Conference on Frontiers in Applied and Computational Mathematics (FACM '05) will be held at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) in Newark, New Jersey. This conference is hosted by the Department of Mathematical Sciences and the Center for Applied Mathematics and Statistics. The conference provides an opportunity for mathematical researchers to present their work in various areas of applied mathematics and statistics, including mathematical biology, fluid mechanics, nonlinear waves, electromagnetics, and applied statistics.
The First Conference on Frontiers in Applied and Computational Mathematics (FACM '04) was held in May 2004 and was a great success. More than 150 mathematical researchers presented some of the latest developments in applied mathematics. The two main themes of that conference were mathematical biology and mathematical fluid dynamics. In addition, significant contributions were presented in the areas of applied statistics, computational methods for partial differential equations, nonlinear optics, and wave propagation. The plenary talks and the invited minisymposium talks, which were presented by some of the leading experts in their fields, contributed greatly to the lively and productive research atmosphere at the conference. In addition, there were a number of high quality poster presentations that led to one-on-one interactions among the participants. The organizers were particularly pleased that a significant number of graduate students participated in the conference and widened their research horizons by interacting with leading experts in their fields of interest. Presentations by representatives of two federal funding agencies, NSF and AFOSR, provided useful insights into a number of funding programs in their agencies.
The expectation is that FACM '05 will be even more successful. This year, FACM ‘05 will include a larger number of participants, partly because it has been extended in length from two days to three days. This will involve a more extensive list of invited speakers who come from leading national and international research institutions. We are looking forward to another inspiring and productive research conference at NJIT!
This conference is made possible by the generous support of NJIT through a Strategic Initiative Award to the Department of Mathematical Sciences. Additional support has been provided by the Mathematical Biosciences Institute at the Ohio State University and by the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics. Further support is being sought from NSF, AFOSR, and SMB. In particular, this support will allow us to partially cover the travel expenses of graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and junior faculty who plan to present their research at FACM ‘05. More details about the application procedure, as well as the scientific program will be available at this website in February 2005. A partial list of invited speakers can be found on the conference poster.
